WHO CAN REQUEST A DRIVERS LICENSE OR STATE ID GENDER
CHANGE?
Any pre, non or
post-operative transsexual. Prior to obtaining a change to the gender
designation, you need to have a letter from a health care provider attesting
that you are in active treatment and living full time according to the
requirements mandated by the Standards of Care. Typically this is a simple
one page letter from a therapist who has "treated" you for Gender Identity
Disorder. Many trans folks in Connecticut have had this gender marker
change done and the Department of Motor Vehicles handles these cases with
the same simplicity as most any other changes, provided you have the
appropriate supporting documentation noted above. You may view a recent
letter from the DMV regarding the policies for granting such a gender marker
change [view
letter]. CTAC has assisted a number of individuals with this process
and has not encountered any problems.
HOW TO
APPLY FOR A DRIVERS LICENSE OF STATE ID GENDER MARKER CHANGE
It
should be noted that effecting a Change of Name in Connecticut for a Trans
person is relatively straightforward
 |
For a Drivers License complete an Application For Change of Name
Form E-78 |
 |
For a
[new] State ID [if you do not drive] complete Application For Connecticut
Identification Card
Form B-230. |
 |
Note:
That for the DL Change it is a little confusing for you are filling out a
Name Change Form. However, they will also change the gender marker. You
should note in the Reason for Change box that you are transitioning.
Since you must provide such documentation, you are not providing any
additional information than already mandated to provide. Though you may
be nervous, it would not help to be clear with the DMV employee that you
are seeking both the name and gender marker change. |
 |
Completed
forms are submitted to the
local DMV office, which has the authority to Driver License changes or
State ID's. |
 |
There
typically is no fee for a Name and Gender Marker Change. |
 |
Note that
you will have a new picture taken, with the issuance of the updated
Identification. |
 |
As noted,
this is a fairly routine process at most every Connecticut DMV. However,
realize that the DMV employee may seek a supervisor prior to completing
the paperwork, for confirmation. It is rare that you need to speak to
anyone else when effecting this change. The process is painless and
empowering when you leave with your legal documentation in your inherent
sex! |
